Description

Milwaukee M18 FUEL™ 1-1/2" Magnetic Drill High Demand Kit (2788-22HD)

The Strongest Cordless Mag Drill in the Industry: Faster Than Corded Performance with Unmatched Safety.

Break free from the generator and the extension cord with the Milwaukee M18 FUEL™ 1-1/2" Magnetic Drill. Engineered for the most demanding steel fabrication and infrastructure projects, this drill delivers the power of a 13-amp corded tool while operating entirely on the M18™ cordless platform. With the ability to drill up to (40) 13/16" holes per charge on the included 12.0Ah batteries, the 2788-22HD is the ultimate high-productivity solution for the jobsite.

At the heart of this tool is the Permanent Magnet Base, which operates without electricity. This ensures the drill remains securely attached to the steel even if the battery dies, providing a level of safety and security that traditional electromagnetic drills cannot match.

Key Features & Professional Benefits:

  • POWERSTATE™ Brushless Motor: Delivers high-torque power that outperforms corded competitors, maintaining speed through 1/2" steel without stalling.

  • Permanent Magnet Safety: The base uses a permanent magnet that requires no power to engage. It delivers up to 2,000 lbs of holding force and stays locked in place regardless of battery status.

  • 1-1/2” Annular Cutter Capacity: Handles large-diameter drilling and up to 1/2" twist bit capacity with the included chuck adapter.

  • AUTOSTOP™ Kickback Protection: Advanced sensors detect excess rotation and automatically shut down the motor to prevent user injury and tool damage.

  • 2-Speed Gearbox: Optimized for both annular cutters (400 RPM) and twist bits (600 RPM), providing the right speed for the right accessory.

  • Weldon Quick-Change Chuck: Enables 100% tool-free accessory changes, allowing you to swap annular cutters in seconds to keep the project moving.

  • High Demand 12.0Ah Batteries: The kit includes two M18™ REDLITHIUM™ HIGH OUTPUT™ HD12.0 batteries, providing 50% more power and running 50% cooler than standard packs.

Milwaukee 2788-22HD: Safety & Mounting Guide

The Permanent Magnet Base on the M18 FUEL™ Mag Drill is a game-changer for jobsite safety, but its holding force depends entirely on the material it is mounted to. Use this guide to ensure your drill stays locked in place.

The 2,000 lbs Holding Force Rule

The maximum holding force of 2,000 lbs is rated on 1-inch thick, clean, flat, mild steel. Performance will vary based on:

  1. Material Thickness: * Optimal: 1/2" or thicker.

    • Minimum: 1/4" thickness is required for safe operation. On steel thinner than 1/4", the magnet cannot achieve a full bond, and the drill may shift or lift during the cut.

  2. Surface Condition: * Clean & Flat: Remove loose scale, heavy rust, or thick paint before mounting. A "gap" of even 1/64" created by debris can reduce holding force by up to 50%.

  3. Coating Thickness:

    • Thick industrial coatings (like epoxy or fireproofing) act as an air gap. For critical overhead drilling, grind a small "landing" to ensure metal-to-metal contact.

Essential Safety Protocol

  • The Safety Chain: Always use the included safety strap or chain when drilling vertically or overhead. While the permanent magnet is incredibly strong, the chain is your "insurance policy" against unforeseen surface failure.

  • AUTOSTOP™ Technology: The 2788-22HD features an internal sensor that detects if the magnet shifts or if the bit binds. If the drill moves even a fraction of an inch, it will cut power to the motor instantly to prevent injury.

  • Permanent Magnet Advantage: Unlike electromagnetic drills, the Milwaukee 2788-22HD will NOT drop off the steel if the battery is removed or dies. The magnet remains engaged at full strength until you manually release the lever.

Mounting Checklist for Vertical & Overhead Jobs

Step Action Why it Matters
1 Wipe Surface Removes oil/debris that could cause "slipping."
2 Check Thickness Ensure the steel is at least 1/4" thick.
3 Engage Lever Feel for the "snap" of the magnet locking in.
4 Strap It Secure the safety chain to a structural point.
5 Test the Bit Center the pilot pin before starting the motor.

Pro Tip: If you are drilling on steel that is thinner than 1/4", place a second piece of 1/2" steel on the opposite side of the material to "sandwich" the magnetism. This will significantly increase your holding force.
