What and How To Use 3M Firestop and Fire Barrier Products
We sell many 3M fire stop and fire barrier safety products at Edmonton Fasteners and Tools. The question is, which ones do you need and what are they for? Sure, you could try them all and overload the building with fireproofed walls, pipes, and ceilings, but why not just fireproof more effectively? Below we describe the various types of 3M fire safety products as well as what they're used for.
Definition
Intumescent - swells or expands when heated.
3M Fire Barrier Pillow
The 3M Fire Barrier pillow is a red, rectangular box shaped pillow that you use to fill gaps to prevent the hazardous and dangerous spread of toxic gases, fumes, smoke, and fire through the gaps in the wall or floor. Use these in floors and walls when there is a hole used for pipes, cables, blank openings, and other through-penetration scenarios. Pack them along the open space until secure.

3M FS-195+ Fire Barrier Wrap Strip
3M FS-195+ Fire Barrier Wrap Strips
are a very convenient and easy to install additional measure of safety.
Like the pillows, these are designed to prevent the spread of fire in
penetrations in fire-rated walls and floor-to-ceiling assemblies. The
strips are made of an intumescent material, which means it expands when
heated. This is beneficial because when the items penetrating the wall,
ceiling, or floor are burning, the strip will expand and maintain a seal
to prevent the spread of the fire, smoke, and gases to go through the
penetration. The seal should last up to four hours.

3M Fire Barrier Moldable Putty Pad
The
3M Fire Barrier Moldable Putty Pad is a one-piece, ready-to-use, intumescent safety material. The putty has the capability to expand minimally 3 times at 1000° F. It
is typically used to protect wall-openings and protects the membrane
penetrations made by listed steel or non-metallic electrical boxes. It's
very quick and easy to install. Apply to the back of electrical outlet
boxes to receive a fire rating.

The 3M Fire Barrier sealants come in a few varieties: Fire Barrier Sealant, Fire Barrier Water Tight Sealant, and Firedam Fire Barrier Sealant. They are able to help control the spread of fire, smoke, gasses before, during, and after being exposed to fire. They are tested to last up to four hours. Each sealant is high performance and ready-to-use. Another feature includes their ability to minimize airborne sound transmission. While they are all very similar, they have some different characteristics that should be paid attention.
